Altun Ha Mayan Ceremonial Site

Altun Ha

Altun Ha has been occupied since the beginning of the Maya Classic era (200 to 900 AD) when thriving Altun Ha had a population of about 10,000 people. There appears to have been a revolt around that time after which the population declined until a brief resurgance in the 12th century AD.

The ceremonial center consists of two plazas & thirteen structures. The magnificent Sun God Temple and Temple of the Masonry Altars crown the well tended site.

The largest Mayan carved jade object was found at Altun Ha. Altun Ha is well worth a visit. Its best to visit in the afternoon when its cooler.
